CRACKz

by Bruno Beltrão / Grupo de Rua

In his choreographies, Beltrão foregoes the – often superficial bravado of hip-hop and reveals the vulnerable side of his dancers. The minimalist, restrained gestures of the dancers are alternated with explosive, fluent collective movements and virtuoso solo sequences.  In CRACKz everyday actions and gestures are abstracted in a breath taking fashion. At the same time, this abstraction is illuminating: the people, the possibilities and the myths of life on the streets are concentrated into a collective, fused stream of movement.

“There's a lot of fundamentalism and narrowmindedness within hip-hop. Dancers are not easily persuaded to deviate from the established patterns. We are interested in this technical, formal side of hip-hop, but we're not obsessed by it. In our performances the transformation is central. We're constantly looking for new encounters between international urban dance and contemporary art. In this, we create scenes full of universal human gestures, in a dance performance without roots or homeland” - Bruno Beltrão
