Sham3edan
الشمعدان
Sham3edan الشمعدان is a new project by nasa4nasa, scheduled to premiere in 2024. In this creation, Noura Seif Hassanein and Salma Abdel Salam embark on a historical research journey into the Shamedan dance (Candelabra Dance) and its evolution in 19th and 20th-century Egypt, examining its transformation in meaning and significance within its socio-political context.
In Sham3edan الشمعدان, Noura Seif Hassanein and Salma Abdel Salam, along with nine women dancers, create a durational choreographic installation that explores the shifts in value associated with the apparatus used by the female bodies that bear its weight.
The sonic landscape crafted by sound artist Ismail Hosny enhances the soundscape generated by the apparatuses in space, revealing the systems of power within a performance that showcases both its playfulness and violence, while simultaneously forging new realms of imagination.
