Since the early 2000s, Maria Hassabi has developed a practice centred on the relation between the live body, the still image, and the sculptural object. Working with stillness, deceleration, and exacting visual composition, her pieces span performance, installation, sculpture, photography, and video. The performing body is often the central element, placed within large-scale installations where gravity, time, and space are in continual negotiation. Her work anchors the attention of both performers and viewers in the present moment, letting the expected spectacle fall away to reveal a shared corporeality and an intimate proximity.
